Sharing of medical records of severe lumbar disc herniation:

Patient information: Female, 47 years old, 12 years history of type I diabetes. There was occasional waist discomfort before, but there were no obvious symptoms of pain.

Medical records:

On May 16, 2020, the patient returned home in the evening. She felt a little uncomfortable at the waist and could still do housework normally. On May 17, 2020, after getting up in the morning, there was obvious discomfort in the waist. The patient chosed to lied down on bed, and obvious pain appeared in the afternoon, except for the lying position. In the evening, she had an accupunture treatment.

The preliminary diagnosis was lumbar disc herniation (the doctor judged that the patient had multiple disc herniation according to clinical experience). After the first acupuncture treatment, the pain symptoms were slightly relieved. Considering the patient's physique, acupuncture combined with herbal treatment.

May 17, 2020, the second visit:

Patient was frail, and had difficulty in standing and walking. Only the right lateral position she can feel better, and there was obvious pain in both the lying flat and on the left side. Changing position requires the support of a family member. Continued acupuncture treatment, and adjusted the prescription of herbal treatment.

May 23, 2020, the fourth visit:

The patient's physical status was significantly improved. Except for the obvious pain in the sitting position, the pain in other positions was basically eliminated. Acupuncture treatment on the same day. Continued the herbal treatment.

May 24-25, 2020, disease feedback.

The patient has been able to get up on her own, sit for a short time, and do some daily housework. The herbal treatment continued.

May 26 - May 31, 2020 , feedback.

During this period, the patient still took herbs every day, and as the pain had been greatly relieved, only three acupuncture treatments were given during this period. On May 31, the patient said that she felt that she can walk normally, the working and sitting also close to normal. It is suggested that the consolidation herbal treatment should be carried out for one week more.

On June 6, 2020, the patient fed back that everything was normal. The treatment is over.

Medical record analysis:

Lumbar disc herniation is a common disease. Patients have different clinical symptoms due to nerve compression caused by disc herniation. Due to the quick effect of acupuncture treatment, the improvement of pain is usually one of the bases for doctors to judge the condition of patients when they receive the first diagnosis.

In the above case, first of all, the health status of the patient is worse than that of the ordinary patient, and is in the acute attack stage. When in a similar situation, the first acupuncture treatment does not improve the pain symptoms and requires multiple continuous treatment. And according to the patient's physical condition, combined with herbal treatment is also a very necessary treatment method.
